The election of Dino Melaye as senator representing Kogi West in the national assembly has been nullified by the tribunal. A fresh election has been ordered by the same tribunal citing cases of irregularities in the previous election in which Dino was declared winner.
The tribunal led by A.O. Chijioke delivered this judgement on Friday in favour of Smart Adeyemi, candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the February 26 election.
In a tweeter, Senator Adeyemi said: “We’ve decided to fight the results of the elections in the tribunal because constitutional injustices must not be allowed to stand.”
Meanwhile, Melaye has reacted to the ruling saying there would have been a fresh election in the axis since he was assured of winning the gubernatorial election scheduled to hold later in the year.
“On Tribunal judgement, no cause for alarm at all. Even if it went my way they will still go to the Appeal Court. Our mandate cannot be taken. We will get judgment at the Appeal Court. There will be a fresh election in Kogi West because I will be Governor. For my Senate mandate no shaking,” Melaye tweeted in reaction to the judgement.
Senator Dino Melaye was the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2019 general election.
